“This site has been useful. I was wondering why employers post no experience needed in the heading then say experience needed in the job description! I am a new graduate looking for employment. I have no experience and live in the "boondocks" in WY. Any help would be greatly appreciated.”
Trying to get your first medical transcription job can sometimes be tough, but you really have to be persistent. If you have completed medical transcription training and have actually typed up reports as part of your training, then all the reports you have typed would be considered as experience and that is something that should really emphasized. Make sure you sell yourself and show your confidence that you CAN do the job and also elaborate on what specialty reports you have done as an MT student and all the experience gained through your training.
A great way to gain the experience needed to work from home is being able to work on-site somewhere to gain that on hands experience. I live in a small area myself and you don’t see much MT jobs showing up on classifieds. Something that you can try doing is cold calling – calling your local hospitals, doctors office, dentists, veterinarians (anywhere an MT is needed), and speaking with the MT in charge and asking if they are in need of new MTs or if they know of anyone looking for medical transcriptionists. Networking – talking with friends and family and even your family physician could help point you in the direction of an MT job. It takes work and persistence, but once you get your foot in the door, you will find more doors opening up for you.
Also, look for clinic note positions – those are the easiest and more on an entry level position. Great for new graduates!
If you haven’t checked it out already, here are some great medical transcription companies that are known to hire new graduates. I was given this information by my MT instructors – visit:

Another great, great way to gain experience is going through the registered apprenticeship program for MTs. Becoming a registered medical transcriptionist will also give you more opportunities to finding your first MT job. To learn more, visit:
